Before the commencement of the entire universe, there was only one entity that ruled over the small scope of the known cosmos. The Ginnungagap ("the yawning void," "the pit," magically charged void,"), a cavernous void which limits were impossible to define held dominion over all. There existed only 3 other worlds, firstly Niflheim with which exuded a dense, cold mist. Muspellheim, the land of fire which gave off a blistering heat. In their dichotomy, fog was created which obscured most of the seen universe. For many eons, everything remained in a stasis before the first sign of life began to kindle. The Yggdrasil ("the ash tree," "the world tree,") sprung from below the Well of Urd ("well of destiny"), its limbs pushing forth in every direction. A mass of wood that twisted upon itself, bending and creasing in patterns that swept across its boughs with wild intent. It split and rejoined, crashing and shattering against a swirling ring that tangled in upon itself and tore a path around to the reverse side, forcing its way upward toward the reaching tips of the branches that splayed across the starry sky above it in violent motion and held totally still. The gnarled mass stretched outwards towards the infinite expanse that surrounded it. For all its size, the space in which it dwelled sought to dwarf it. Luminous clouds, pushed away in every direction and fell away behind the meridian of the horizon. Everything was equally far away, leaving itself distant from all things. The Well of Urd stretched below the Yggdrasil, carved in glimmering relief and veiled in a thin blue halo. It was lost amidst the enormity of the thing the tree beheld. The memories of the Yggdrasil's offspring hung in the eddies, overlaid against the wild routes that traced in the shapes of the bark.
The Yggdrasil fluxed with a boundless amount of energy, brushing forward and back through every intricate stem and branch. The awe-inspiring aura came together to form a great being, namely known as Ansemund Innangard ("Protector of God Within the Enclosure"). He played the role of a sentinel, ensuring the safety of the Yggdrasil so that it could never be plunged back into the Ginnungagap and disable the order that was established between the worlds. Nidhogg ("He Who Strikes Malice") was a serpent who chewed on the bark of the Ash Tree in an attempt to root it from the soil and condemn it to the Ginnungagap. He would often engage in combat with Ansemund, but Ansemund would easily defeat him.
As time progressed, the Yggdrasil birthed more entities known as 'The Eternals" The first of them was known as Phanes Acmon ("First Born"). After Phanes came Messiah, Hesporos, Mephistopheles, Thanatos, Gaia, Chronos, Ananke, and Nyx. Phanes created Asgard, Realm of the Primordials, with his power; Ansemund connecting the roots of the Yggdrasil through the world. Ansemund created the last of the Nine Worlds: Jotunnheim, Svartalfheim, Alfheim, Vanaheim, Helheim, and Midgard. To each Eternal, a domain and a world.
The Eternals began to propagate, creating a second breed of less powerful entities known as "Gods." The gods mated and created a vast genealogy of creatures that had no power over affinities or omnipotence. They were dubbed "humans," which found home within Midgard. The power difference between Humans, Gods, and Eternals are worlds apart, progressively becoming more formidable up the ladder.
The Eternals pleaded that Ansemund created adherents for them and so he did, one by one, the Eternals were given humans birthed from the Yggdrasil for their own causes. They were known as the Nine Sagas, and for awhile their main purpose was to safeguard the Nine Worlds from which they hailed from. The Eternals began to divide through disagreements and thus the Sagas were split apart for eons, until rejoining once more on the eve of Ragnarok. They assembled together alongside the Eternals in a battle that was to end in the destruction of the known cosmos. At last, in the ultimate reversal of the original process of creation, the ravaged land sank back into the sea and vanished below the waves. The perfect darkness and silence of the anti-cosmic void, Ginnungagap, reigned once more.
After the re-development of the Nine Worlds, the spirits and souls of the Nine Sagas were collected by the Eternals and bound together to create a great column in the center of Vigard, which stretched up into the sky above in its platinum glory. The spire was dubbed "Irminsul," from which the Eternals branded the last name of a family created for a similar purpose the Nine Sagas held.
